Dr. Gregory J. Borrowdale and his staff are pleased to offer you a wide range of cosmetic dentistry procedures to enhance your smile and appearance. In some cases, these procedures also provide restorative value. We are happy to answer questions about any of the cosmetic enhancements described below during a personal consultation.
Bonding and White Fillings
Bonding disguises unsightly tooth problems such as stains, gaps, cracks, and even minor misalignment. It is more cost-effective for many patients than porcelain veneers or traditional metal fillings. Dr. Borrowdale first removes the decayed or otherwise unattractive portion of the tooth, fills it with liquid or gel, and then applies the bonding agent. He trims and polishes the resin to provide you with an aesthetically pleasing dental restoration.
White fillings, which you may have heard described as composite or tooth colored fillings, are made from plastic and glass particles. They match the shade of your teeth so you can disguise your dental treatment to others.
Inlays and Onlays
When a portion of your tooth enamel is still healthy, Dr. Borrowdale may place an inlay or an onlay to preserve it. Inlays are most appropriate when the cusps of your teeth have not yet sustained any damage. He places the inlay between the cusps to give additional strength to the tooth. When some or all of the cusps of your teeth have become damaged, he places an onlay over at least one of them.
Receiving an inlay or onlay typically takes two appointments, although three may occasionally be necessary to ensure a proper fit. Dr. Borrowdale first removes the decayed part of the tooth and then takes an impression of it. We provide you with a temporary restoration while waiting for your new inlay or onlay to return from the lab. Your dentist cements the restoration in place for the final step.
Your teeth can become stained as you age due to poor oral hygiene habits, smoking, eating and drinking certain foods, and even taking certain medications. Professional teeth whitening brightens the enamel in your teeth with carbamide peroxide to increase the shade by several times. For the first appointment at Dr. Borrowdale’s office in Folsom, California, he takes impressions of your upper and lower teeth so the laboratory can create custom mouth trays for you.
When the trays return from our lab, we will call you in for a fitting. You then take the trays home, fill them with a bleaching agent, and wear them for at least a few hours a day. Within a week to 10 days, your smile will be brighter than you thought possible.
Veneers are a wafer-thin piece of ceramic that adhere to one or more teeth to disguise minor imperfections. Stains, cracks, chips, gaps, and misalignment are common reasons that our patients request veneers. Dr. Borrowdale first removes decay if it is present and possible a tiny portion of tooth enamel so the veneer fits properly. He then places dental cement on the tooth, places the veneer on top of it, and uses a curing light to force it to harden in place.
