If you need an inlay or onlay, you may also hear Dr. Gregory Borrowdale or his staff refer to them as partial crowns. He chooses to use one of these treatments when at least some of your tooth enamel is still healthy. The inlay or onlay helps to increase the strength of your tooth so you are able to preserve it. It also helps to guard against future infections and other problems that threaten your oral health. Inlays and onlays are typically constructed from porcelain, gold, or composite metal. We will determine which material will work best for you at your initial consultation.
Dr. Borrowdale chooses an inlay when the cusps of your teeth are not yet damaged. He places the inlay between these cusps for maximum protection. When you have more significant damage to the structure of your tooth, he places an onlay. For this type of restoration, he places the onlay over one or more of your tooth cusps.
The Process of Receiving Inlays and Onlays
It typically requires two or three appointments for Dr. Borrowdale to complete the process of fitting you with an inlay or onlay. Although most patients require only two appointments, we want to make you aware that a third may be necessary just to make sure that your restoration fits properly.
During your first visit to Dr. Borrowdale’s dental office in Folsom, he removes all decay present on your tooth. He then takes an impression of the treated tooth and sends it to our laboratory. Its takes up to a couple of weeks for our lab technicians to create your new inlay or onlay. However, you don’t have to go that long without your dental restoration. That is because we fit you with a temporary inlay or onlay during the first appointment. This gives you the benefit of an improved smile right away.
When you come in for your second appointment, Dr. Borrowdale finalizes the placement of your new inlay or onlay. He places it in your mouth to ensure a comfortable fit and makes adjustments if they are necessary. Our staff takes pride in making your inlay or onlay look identical to your natural teeth. To complete the process, Dr. Borrowdale places dental cement on the tooth receiving the inlay or onlay and then places it on top of the adhesive. You won’t be able to stop smiling once you catch a glimpse of your new restoration.
Inlays and onlays are a simple and inexpensive alternative to crowns, bridges, and other more high-end dental restorations. Please contact us with additional questions or to schedule an appointment.
