If you have stained, misshapen, chipped, or cracked teeth, porcelain veneers may be the ideal cosmetic dentistry option for you. They also make a good choice when you want to disguise a larger than normal gap between two of your teeth. A porcelain veneer is made from casings of ceramic that are wafer-thin in appearance. Dr. Gregory Borrowdale places an adhesive on the front exterior of the tooth and then bonds the veneer to it. The result is a beautiful, natural smile that you won’t hesitate to display.
Dr. Borrowdale carefully plans for the placement of your new porcelain veneers by considering the teeth surrounding the ones receiving treatment. He makes sure that your cosmetic dentistry procedure enhances your smile without drawing special attention to the porcelain veneers. As far as anyone else can tell, they are your natural teeth.
As long as you take good care of your new veneers, they should last for the remainder of your life. It’s important to avoid habits such as biting on pen caps or ice cubes and to practice excellent oral hygiene. Our staff will go over several tips with you during your final fitting. One of the many advantages of veneers is that they are not prone to staining as your natural teeth can be.
What to Expect on the Day of Your Procedure
Before Dr. Borrowdale can place your porcelain veneer, he needs to do a few things to prepare the tooth. Some patients require the removal of up to one-eighth of a millimeter of tooth enamel so the treated tooth does not stick out further than the others. He also removes the portion of your tooth with discoloration or another issue.
Next, Dr. Borrowdale takes an impression of the tooth to be treated and sends this to our dental laboratory. The lab technicians create a customized veneer for you and send it back to him. Because this can take a few weeks, we can fit you with a temporary restoration in the meantime. Your temporary veneer blends in just as seamlessly with your natural teeth as your permanent veneer.
Dr. Borrowdale will complete your restoration when you return to our office for your second appointment. He will place the veneers to make sure that they fit in your mouth comfortably. After applying a special dental cement and placing the veneer over it, he uses a curing light to allow the piece of ceramic to harden in place. The process is simple and painless. Best of all, you leave our office with a beautiful new smile.
