Dr. Gregory Borrowdale and his staff provide exceptional cleaning and polishing of teeth at every appointment. We also complete a thorough examination to check for any undiagnosed oral health issues. We may ask you questions about your oral hygiene habits in order to provide you with tips for improvement if necessary. Dr. Borrowdale and the team of dental hygienists may also offer suggestions for preventive services such as sealants and wearing a night guard to minimize the symptoms of temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ) and bruxism.
Many patients are unaware when they have the early form of gum disease called gingivitis or even when their gum issues are more advanced. The inability to recognize symptoms is one reason that gum disease develops in the first place. If the dentist or hygienists feel that you have developed this problem, they may recommend root scaling or planing.
These procedures eliminate gum pockets as well as provide your teeth with the deep cleaning they need to withstand tartar, plaque, and bacteria. Root planing and scaling can help you to preserve your natural teeth as well as prevent bone loss.
Screening for Oral Cancer
Dentists play a key role in the early detection of oral cancer when patients are able to treat it most successfully. During your routine exam, Dr. Borrowdale checks your neck and oral tissues for recurring sores, white or red patches, or unusual lumps. All of these are common signs of oral cancer.
The biggest risk factors for developing oral cancer are smoking and heavy consumption of alcohol. For this purpose, this involves consuming 30 or more alcoholic beverages in a seven-day period. Smoking, drinking, or both accounts for approximately 75 percent of new oral cancer diagnoses. Environmental, lifestyle, and genetic factors also play a role.
Scaling & Root Planing
During scaling and root planing, our periodontist removes tartar and plaque that have formed below your gum line. This is what leads to gum disease. Using dental instruments specially designed for this purpose, the periodontist cleans the teeth and gums while smoothing out gum pockets that have developed. The risk of having tartar and plaque in your gum pockets is that bacteria can invade more easily. Bacteria toxins can cause irritation as well.
The back teeth are especially prone to decay and needing fillings because they are hard to reach with a toothbrush. If he feels that you would benefit from a sealant, Dr. Borrowdale will apply one to protect the chewing surfaces of your back teeth. A sealant is a thin plastic coating that he bonds to your teeth in a procedure that typically takes no more than a few minutes.
